The first of these to be announced is with the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers.
NEIMME has one of the largest mining libraries worldwide and its archives include a large photographic collection, geological and geographic maps and surveys and engineering reports.
We are calling for proposals from artists who are particularly interested to develop their practice in relation to historical and social contexts. We are particularly interested in the use of the archive, illuminating or re-animating the history of mining in the region and in new technological approaches to this, bringing old materials and mediums into a creative dialogue with digital media.
Fees of £1800 are available for the selected practitioner, plus a materials budget of £400.
Applicants should submit a CV and a short proposal (of 1000 words) of how you would approach this commission, together with digital images of their recent work. Digital images should be jpegs and should be 72dpi to a maximum of 12×10 inches (30x25cm). Applications should be sent to Amanda Ritson, NEPN, University of Sunderland, Ashburne House, Ryhope Road, Sunderland SR2 7EF or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are not able to accept applications from those who are in full-time education. Applicants should be based in the North East or have a strong connection to the region. The commission should be undertaken between March-June 2011.
The deadline for receipt of applications is 1 March 2011.
Successful applicants will be announced by 8 March 2011. Selection will be undertaken by NEPN, NEIMME and regional curatorial and creative partners.
Please ensure that you have included a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage if you require your work to be returned. NEPN can accept no responsibility for loss or damage of any material submitted as part of this process.
