Curator talk: Caroline Douglas, Head of the Arts Council Collection
Hatton Gallery, Newcastle
The Arts Council Collection is the largest national loan collection of modern and contemporary British art, comprising over 7,500 works. At this special event, Caroline Douglas will discuss the collection in the context of the current exhibition at the Hatton Gallery, Another Face: Works from the Arts Council Collection, in which the seemingly traditional genre of portraiture is examined and reinvented in media ranging from painting to Polaroid and sculpture to 16mm film, including work by Hilary Lloyd, Melanie Manchot, Rosalind Nashashibi, Mark Neville, Lucy Skaer, Toby Ziegler and Bettina von Zwehl.

Paul Hobson, Director’s Talk: Contemporary Art Society – 100 Not Out
Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead
Join Paul Hobson, Director of the Contemporary Art Society, for a special talk about the history of the Contemporary Art Society, which celebrated its centenary in 2010. The organization exists to develop collections of contemporary art and over the past 100 years, it has gifted over 8,000 works to public collections. This has included works by photographers such as Gillian Wearing, Richard Billingam, Simon Norfolk, Catherine Opie and Shizuka Yokomizo The talk will focus in particular on the legacy and continued work of the organization in relation to museums and collectors in the North East of England.
Co-hosted with the Friends of Shipley Art Gallery.
