Museum Dialogues, Exhibiting, Collecting and Activating Photography

  • Dates:January 2024 - 2025
  • Status:Ongoing

Photography’s multifaceted nature and expanded field of operations and the sheer volume of photographs existing in both physical and online realms present significant challenges for 21st century museums.

This 12-month research network aspires to transcend the disciplinary boundaries of art history, visual culture, photography, new media, museum and curating studies and bridge theory and practice. It seeks to unite scholars, archivists, curators, museum workers, and artists from across the globe with a view to developing a comprehensive understanding and exchange of innovative solutions, inquiries, and practical challenges relating to the exhibition, collection and interpretation of photography.

Please join us!   Be part of this network and workshop programme!

AIMS

  • Establish a transnational community comprising scholars, archivists, curators, museum workers, and artists from across the globe and with representatives from a range of art and photography institutions who will engage in knowledge exchange regarding practices of collecting and exhibiting photography.
  • Record innovative methodologies and new tools used in curating and collecting photography.
  • Enhance understanding of how shifts in professional museum practice internationally have shaped the appreciation and comprehension of transnational photographic cultures.
  • Examine methods by which museums can incorporate born-digital and social photography in their collections and explore adaptations to normative practices.
  • Investigate how museums can utilise photography as a “democratic” tool for public engagement fostering discussions on broader social and political issues and processes.
